We are proud to declare that pioneer of womens’ education in Howrah district, Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College (formerly, Girls’ College, Howrah) has been declared as a College with Potential for Excellence(CPE)by the University Grants Commission in the year 2009 & is one of the eight colleges under Calcutta University to be honoured with such status and has received the award for the years 2010-2012. The four basic science departments have also received one time grantfor laboratory development. Our college will celebrate its 65th anniversary year in 2011-2012-which will ironically coincide with the 65th year of Indian independence. It was indeed a bliss to be alive at the dawn of independence in India on August15,1947. It was a heavenly experience also to be young at that time, since the founder Principal, the Late Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya, along with some of his educationist friends realised in every fibre of their being the paramount importance of higher education among the young girls of the time. The college was founded on the first day of August, 1947 with a view to satisfying the gradually increasing demand for higher education among the girls of the district of Howrah. There is no gainsaying the fact that the foresight of the Founder-Principal and his enthusiastic friends bore fruit, with the passage of time, in the shape of his largest girls' college, not merely in India but also in Asia.We pay our 'debt immense' of 'endless gratitude' to our farsighted predecessors for effloresence of this institution. From a humble beginning, the college has made a steady development and now is reckoned with as the most reputed girls'college in WestBengal.
This college at the sametime, boasts to be the singular exclusively girls' college in the district. In the year 2005 the college has been assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accrediation Council with a B++ grade. We however, hope to convert it to an A-grade or even better college. The college offers higher education upto Honours level in 18 subjects in Arts, Science and Commerce streams. The College has successfully introduced Honours Course in Zoology from the session (2010-11). We also offer B.ED. (An NCTE recognised professional course) and this year(2011) we have receive C.U.approval to open Physical Science, Life Science and Mathematics as method papers. The introduction of Computer Science & Microbiology Honours and general courses is another significant achievement of the college.Bio-Science (General) from 1996 and Sociology (General) from 2003-04 session have been running to fulfil the long cherished demands of the students. From the session (2005-2006), the college has introduced 9UGC approved career-oriented add-on courses, three each from Science, Humanities and Commerce streams as parallel education system. As per recommendation of the NAAC, the college has introduced two new subjects: Hindi and Music as general course from the session 2006-2007. In addition to that, the college has also introduced Statistics(general) from the same session. Keeping pace with the advent of time, the college has introduced Journalism and Mass communication as well as Electronics(general courses) in 2007.
